While the UFC is truly in the driver’s seat when it comes to mixed-martial arts entertainment, Strikeforce is making a bid to become a successful model for how to run an MMA promotion. While EliteXC, and the now defunct(mostly) IFL took on huge loses, Strikeforce continues to turn a profit while offering quality fighters and mma cards. Add to that the success of the Strikeforce NBC show, and Strikeforce is looking like it’s the second best promotion(business wise, not card or fighter wise) in MMA, with WEC coming in right behind. A lot of the success of Strikeforce must go to Scott Coker, the CEO, who has taken the promotion from a regional mma player into a national one. However all is not bleak for EliteXC. The initial ratings were solid, and while the card was sub-par, the next card could bring some degree of MMA professionlism. A real main event, such as Robbie Lawler vs. Scott Smith with an accomplished televised card could go a long way towards making EliteXC a competitive MMA promotion. EliteXC should consider doing a joint-promotion show on CBS with Strikeforce, as Strikeforce has some good up and coming fighters, and has Cung Le which can help sell out an arena while giving the fans a great stand up show. EliteXC has said in the past that they have no problems with joint promotions, but with CBS ratings and sponsors on the line, it will be interesting to see how Shaw reacts.   [read the full post]
